HTC has announced “the ultimate selfie phone” in the new Desire EYE, which has a 13 megapixel front-facing camera, making it one of the highest spec of any handset of its kind currently available.
So we can look forward to more “duckfaces” than ever before.
It formed part of an impressive new line-up of products, that also includes the new RE camera, which is a handheld cam designed to be an everyday alternative to the action-centric GoPro, but will also link-up with your smartphone, and HTC’s new editing suites; EYE Experience and Zoe.
Here’s a rundown of all the major points from HTC’s presentation in New York.
The 5.2 inch full HD screen teams up with a 13 megapixel camera and dual LED flash on the front of the device. These would be impressive for the rear of a phone, to have them on both sides will be heaven to selfie lovers.
The front-facing camera also has face-tracking technology, as well as Auto and Voice Selfie features, meaning if you “say cheese” the device will take a photo. Saying “action” or “rolling” also prompts the camera to start video recording. Auto Selfie will automatically take a photo when you hold the phone steady.
With potentially so many media options it’s probably a good thing you can get storage up to 128GB with an extra SD card.
An unusual looking handheld device, the RE is activated when you pick it up, so doesn’t have a power button.
It comes with a 16 megapixel camera and the ability to record in full 1080p HD. The battery can also handle up to 1 hour and 40 minutes of continuous recording HTC says.
There’s a dedicated app to link up the camera with your phone, and the device is fully waterproof.
WiFi and Bluetooth are built in for syncing with your smartphone, and there’s a microUSB port too. The RE is also compatible with both Android and iOS.
HTC’s new native image software, EYE Experience software is the power behind a lot of the new camera features on the Desire EYE. As well as the likes of face-tracking, it also supports Split Capture, where you can gather image or video from both front and rear cameras at the same time.
HTC says this means not only can you now capture an event, but also your own reaction to it. Think surprise party complete with your own surprised-looking selfie.
Zoe looks like HTC’s version of iMovie, mixed with YouTube. Zoe enables users to edit and mix images and video together – complete with themes – before posting it to the app’s own built-in community of other users, as well as use the media from other users of the same event to create one project.
It has the potential to be a potent mix when combined with the RE camera, as long as the users arrive of course. Perhaps that’s why Zoe isn’t just HTC native like EYE Experience, instead it will be available for free across Android, and on iOS.
